"About Life”
By Anthony Fermin
Visayan artist Anthony Fermin does it again as he captures the joys of everyday Filipino living. His bold splashes of color give life and joy to the scenes he portrays. Fermin is known for painting traditional Filipino scenes.
In “First Trip”, Fermin gives excitement to this journey people take daily, probably on the way to work or school. There is a quiet delight as the passengers go off to what they normally do. It doesn’t matter whether they are rich or poor, or what awaits them at the end of the trip but what matters is that they are alive and well, going on and about in their daily routine.
In “Empanada”, as the ladies do their trade, they seem quite pleased and proud to do so. The ladies here will convince the buyer to buy and try the empanada and then as the buyer eats it, he will surely love it and with that one bite, a joy is shared between buyer and seller. Everyone is busy selling and eating the empanada, a simple joy one can have.
Anthony Fermin’s artistic journey began at the tender age of 4. His love for life is shared in his paintings, which are mostly characterized by boldness, joy, love, sharing and positivity. As an artist, the self taught Anthony Fermin traversed the world with such hope and eagerness, his works reaching far and wide. In 2000, he joined the Expo Ostrich Egg Exhibit Project in Hanover, Berlin to help poor African children. In 2009 he was commissioned to do 25 paintings for Atmosphere Resort in Dumaguete City. In 2009, he also joined “Looking for Juan” in California, and “The Athenaeum” in San Diego, California USA. He also did some work at the Cultural Center of the Philippines for CANVAS PROJECT, Manila. In 2010, he created the 2010 Art Workshop for homeless kids in Bantayan, Cebu. His latest international project in Vienna, Austria was a fundraiser for the reconstruction of Bantigue Elementary School, which was destroyed during the Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
“About Life” is Fermin’s 30th solo exhibit.
